Abstrakt     In a prospective study bronchoscopic needle aspiration (BNA) was performed with both flexible Olympus and rigid Story needles in 34 patients (pts) with confirmed and 60 pts with suspected lung cancer. Our findings were: lung cancer in 72 pts, extrapulmonary malignant tumours in 12 and benign diseases in 10 pts. The sensitivity of BNA was 62% (48 of 78 pts with malignant infiltration of mediastinal lumph nodes or mediastinum), the specificity was 100% (16 of 16) and the accuracy was 68% (64 of 94). The sensitivity of BNA with flexible needle was 45% (35 pts) and with rigid needle 59% (46 pts). In 13 pts malignant cells were found in the aspirate from the rigid needle only, and in 2 pts from the flexible needle only. BNA was the only bronchological method confirming malignant disease in 12% (10 pts). After BNA with rigid needle haemorrhage in the bronchi was observed in six and pneumomediastinum in one patient.
