Abstrakt		Slovenia is known as a country with very high overall alcohol consumption and extremely high overall availability of alcohol. These facts have a tremendous effect on public health and public good as shown by targets and indicators of the European Alcohol Action Plan. At the same time Slovenia has almost no regulations of alcohol consumption (traffic law is the only exception), practically no alcohol policy and thus veryfew preventive measures. Fundamental aim of alcohol policy is to reduce alcohol problems. Slovenian alcohol polity is at the very beginning stage of its development. There is no political support for such activities at this time. There is also lack of epidemiological studies or surveys which could give relevant data on drinking patterns and consequences of alcohol use. Treatment of alcohol addiction and some preventive activities on drink driving are quite effective but can not change the level of per capita consumption. The obstacles to community and municipal action on alcohol will be discusse and suggestions for future alcohol policy in Slovenia will be given.
