Abstrakt     In the present study we have tried to find eventual correlation between myosin heavy chain isoforms and prevalent metabolic type of muscle fibres in rat tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus and diaphragm muscles. Fibre types have been determined due to their myofibrillar ATPase activity. Monoclonal antibodies were applied to determine the presence of myosin heavy chains (MHC-l, MHC-2a, MHC-2x/d, MHC-2b) within individual fibres. Succinate dehydrogenase and menadion- linked-alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase were demonstrated histochemically and their activity measured histophotometrically. Regarding the activity of both enzymes within the same fibres, oxidative fibres were separated from oxidative-glycolytic and glycolytic. All fibre types in the three muscles exhibited all three possible metabolic types. Some examples, like glycolytic type 1 fibres in the diaphragm were rare, but clearly recognisable. We conclude, that the prevailing metabolic type is most probably more muscle than MHC linked.
