Abstrakt     The range of plasticity and adaptational potential intrinsic to satellite cells were investigated during regeneration of slow and fast muscle. Rat soleus (SOL) and extensor digitorum longus muscles (EDL) were injured and transplanted to the bed of the EDL muscle, so that both types of muscles regenerated innervated by the EDL nerve. Expression of myosin heavy chain was demonstrated immunohistochemically and by in situ hybridisation. Three month after muscle transplantation SOL muscle regenerating in place of the EDL and innervated by the EDL nerve produced all adult MHC isoforms, including the MHC-2B, which were detected in about 50% of muscle fibres. MHC-1 and -2B were coexpressed in some muscle fibres. Expression of MHC-1 was significantly greater in the SOL than in EDL although both muscles had been innervated by the same nerve. The adaptive range of MHC expression in the SOL muscle regenerating "de novo" from its myogenic (satellite) cells is broader than of mature normal SOL muscle.
