Abstrakt     The animals studied were 32 castrated males, crossbreds (Landrace x Large White) x Duroc. Two brothers from sixteen nests were allocated to two treatment groups at weight of app. 30 kg. Pigs were individually logged and received feed that contained 13.5 MJkg 1 digestible energy, 142 g/kg crude proteins and 116 g/kg digestible crude proteins. One group of pigs was fed ad libitum, while restricted feeding was used to slower growth in the other group of pigs. Samples for chemical and histological analysis were taken 1 hour postmortem from Longissimus dorsi muscle at the level of 13th-14th rib. Ad libitum fed pigs grew faster than restricted pigs from 30 to 100 kg (103.0 vs 78.3 days, p<0.001). Daily gain (g/kg) from 30 to 100 kg was higher in ad libitum fed than restricted pigs (893 vs 659 g, p<0.001). Loineye area was larger in restricted than ad libitum fed pigs (39.3 vs 35.6 cm2, p<0.01). No significant effect of restricted feeding was found on meat chemical composition; only intramuscular fat content was slightly lower in restrictively fed pigs (1.87 vs 2.19 %, p<0.10). We were unable to show any significant effect of restricted feeding on number of beta R, alpha R or alpha W fibres or cross- sectional area, diameter and relative area of alpha R or alpha W fibres. The only significant effect of restricted feeding was observed in beta R fibres. Cross-sectional area, diameter and relative area of beta R fibres were bigger in restrictively than ad libitum fed pigs (2986 vs 2607 micro m2, p<0.05; 60.5 vs 56.2 micro m, p<0.05; 11.46 vs 9.69 %, p<0.10, respectively).
