Abstrakt		In eight male neurologically intact adult subjects assistance of ventilation was performed with functional electrical stimulation (FES) of abdominal muscles in synchrony with naturally occuring breathing. The stimulation of mainly rectus abdominis via surface electrodes was performed in supine position. Significant augmentation of ventilation due predominantly to increase in tidal volume was observed. The results provide a basis for further studies with patients in borderline ventilatory failure.
