Abstrakt     One of the principal data sources for assessing the state of nation's health is the compilation of mortality statistics on causes of death. In Slovenia the data analyses on causes of death indicate that the difference between male and female in average age at death is more than nine years. In the present work we anticipated to find out some diseases, causing that men older than 20 years die frequently and younger than women of the same ages. We were also interested in how some characteristics of the individuals affected, registrated in the prescripted documents influenced the difference in gender in a percentage part of the above mentioned diseases. The observed population were all deceased persons older than 19 years in Slovenia in period between 1978 and 1991. We divided the deceased and the inhabitiants of Slovenia into two groups: 20 to 64 and 65 and over. The sources for the present analysis were the data base of decased at The Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia. We used the elementary statistical methods and the descriptive epidemiology as well as discriminate analyse. Male to female rate ratios of diseases and the difference of the average age at death in gender (SMR>1, z>0,05) indicate that men in younger age group according to the period when being observed died frequently and younger than women for the reasons, of diseases submitted in categories, as follows: Injuries and poisonings, Diseases of circulatory system, followed by Respiratory and Digestive sytem diseases. Concerning three categories, Suicides, ischaemic heart diseases, Accidents with motor vehicles, Other diseases of digestive system where liver and pancreatic disease are placed, Drawnings, Suffocations and other accidents followed by Respiratory diseases are the most important causes of death.
