Abstrakt     The aim of the study was to investigate the survival of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Ljubljana according to utstein style. Ljubljana is a midsized urban community which encompasses an area of approximately 450 km2 and has 420.000 residents. The area is served by a single response emergency medical system consisting of emergency team with general physician performing advanced cardiac life support. Between January 1, 1995 and December 31, 1996 there were 257 patients with out-hospital cardiac arrest of presumed cardiac etiology in whom cardiopulmonary resuscitation was attempted. The time from call to arrival of emergency team to the scene was 3 to 45 minutes (average 12.4+6.6 minutes, median 11 minutes). Asystole was initial rhythm in 62% of patients, ventricular fibrillation or tachycardia in 26% of patients while other non-perfusing rhythms were observed in 12% of patients. At the arrival of emergency team, lay-bystander life support was performed in 21% of patients. Reestablishement of spontaneous circulation was achieved in 30% of patients and 25% were admitted to intensive care unit. Seventeen patients (6.6%) survived to hospital discharge. Due to ischemic brain damage, 4 of them never regain consciousness.
