Abstrakt		Several studies have found that the course of schizophrenia with psychopathologic symptoms, social characteristics (employment, family, significant others) and adverse effects of antipsychotics influence the quality of life of patients with schizophrenia. The aim of the study was to find out whether chronic symptoms of schizophrenia, antipsychotic adverse effects and psychosocial performance influence the quality of life of outpatients receiving depot antipsychotics. In a 20% sample of schizophrenic outpatients (100 males, 100 females) from Outpatients clinic in Ljubljana receiving long-term depot antipsychotic maintenance therapy demographic, clinical and drug history data were collected. Following instruments were used: Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale, Rating Scale for Drug-Induced Akathisia, Rating Scale for Extrapyramidal Side Effects, Krawiecka Scale, Global Assessment Scale (GAS) and Quality of Life Scale (QuL). Multivariate logistic regression was used with GAS scores up to 70 or above as a dependent variable. The patients were on average 44 years old. Males were younger at the beginning of the disease. The duration of illness was 13 years for both sexes. Patients were treated with antipsychotics 11 years approximately. They were four times hospitalised. One third of patients had additional somatic diseases. The alcohol abuse was present in 10% of patients and 3% of patients were addicted to alcohol. Females were more anxious. Tardive dyskinesia were present in 13,5% of patients, parkinsonism in nearly half of patients and akathisia in 25% of patients. The average GAS score was 70. The domains in QoL scale were rated between 3 and 4. There was high correlation between total QoL scores and GAS scores. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
