Abstrakt		Diagnostic imaging is significant for the diagnosis and management of pediatric disease. The use of imaging techniques and the use of ionizing radiation in paricular, are increasing. These trends have implications for the safety of the children, since children are the ones most at risk of radiation damage, which is higher than previously thought. Imaging is also costly. The use of diagnostic imaging in a pediatric population must, therefore, be considered cerefully. It is also important, that the methods used for imaging are the best and the safest for each particular child, and least costly. Using this approach, considerable rationalization of diagnostic imaging can be achieved. The purpose of the study was, firstly to define criteria for the most rational use of methods of diagnostic imagigng and subsequently, to use and to verify these criteria in certain diagnosti c areas with specific diagnostic goals and secondly, to assess adequate approaches to the rationalization of diagnostic imaging according to specific diagnostic imaging intents and to validate these approaches for the rationalization of the initial diagnostic imaging procedure, diagnostic imaging in screening, follow-up diagnostic imaging, and diagnostic imaging when a new imaging method becomes available. The aim of the study was to contribute to establishing a systematic approach to the rationalization of diagnostic imaging in pediatrics. The results of the study proved that the criteria we defined for the rational use of imaging methods are adequate and can be divided into general and diagnostic imaging criteria. General criteria can be further divided into three categories, the first category including the criteria which take into account certain harm or risk or are in anyway invasive for a child such us ionizing radiation, sedation, transportation, injections, catheterization, and others, (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
