Abstrakt     Tick-borne encephalitits (TBE) is a viral infection of central nervous system. In Slovenia, the disease is well known and has been described for several times. Cerebrospinal fluid lymphocyte subsets were analysed by flow cytometry in 33 patients with TBE. Lymhocytes were isolated from cerebrospinal fluid, lymphocyte subsets were determined (CD3+cells, CD19+cells, CD3-CD56+cells, CD3+CD4+ cells, CD3+CD8+ cells) and the expression of CD25 and CD71 molecules on T cells and HLA-DR molecules on T cell subsets were examined. Cerebrospinal fluid neopterin (radioimmune assay) and beta2-microglobulin (fluoroimmunometric assay) concentrations were determined and compared to the levels in cerebrospinal fluid of patients without meningitis. TBE patient population subgroups, regarding gender, age (under/oveer 40 year of age), severity of TBE disease (with or without consciousness disturbances) and duration of meningitis/meningoencephalitis were also analysed. The percentage of T cells (expressed as percentage of total lymphocytes) in the lymphocyte population was significantly higher in cerebrospinal fluid than in peripheral blood (p=0,001). Comparison between the different expressions of T cell surface antigens revealed that cerebrospinal fluid T cells expressed significantly higher amounts of CD71 (p=0,007) molecules. Mean percentages of CD19+ (p=0,004) and CD3-CD56+ (p=0,001) lymphocytes prevailed in the peripheral blood in comparison to cerebrospinal fluid. Compared to the patients without meningitis, the patients with TBE had significantly higher levels of cerebrospinal fluid neopterin (p=0,00001) and beta2-microglobulin (p=0,0004). In the early course (more then or equal 4 days) of the disease higher expression of HLA-DR molecules (p<0,05) on T lymphocytes was observed, while later (more then or equal 5 days) a higher expression of IL-2 receptors (CD25+) was noticed (p<0,05).
