Abstrakt     In our study we included 24 E. coli strains isolated from faeces of dogs with diarrhea at the Veterinary Microbiological Diagnostics Centre of the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Immunology of the Utrecht University. Only beta - haemolytic E. coli, which were pure cultures of more than 10/4 cells per gram faeces were selected. We performed PCR with specific primers for toxin gene cnf1 and for fimbrial genes papA, papEFg, papG, F17A, F17G and nonfimbrial adhesin intimin. Several of the PCR products were cloned into the pMOS vector and a part of their nucleotide sequence was determined with ALF. We analysed the obtained sequences with the program BLAST and we drew an evolutionary distance tree for papA genes with the program PHYLIP. The chromosomal DNA of the investigated strains was hybridised with probes specific for papA, papEFg, papG, F17A, F17G, intimin and cnf1. Plasmid content of the investigated strains was examined. Twenty-one strains were positive in the PCR for cnf1 and sixteen using hybridisation. For papA eighteen strains were positive in the PCR and nineteen were positive using hybridisation. The sequence of seventeen was determined. For papEFg twenty-three were positive in the PCR and seventeen were positive using hybridisation. The partial sequence of seven positive strains was determined. For the papG fourteen were positive in the PCR and twenty using hybridisation, and three of them were partially sequenced. For the F17A, three were positive in the PCR and none using hybridisation. For the F17G four of the strains were positive in the PCR and none using hubridisation. The partial sequence of all was determined. Six of the examined strains harboured at least one plasmid. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
