Abstrakt     The development of prostatic carcinoma is not associated with characteristic early symptoms. Generally, the diagnosis is established late, or the condition is discovered accidentaly. Recently, determination of prostatic specific antigen (PSA) in the serum has been used for early diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma, in addition to standard rectal examination and transrectal ultrasound. PSA is synthetized exclusively in the prostatic parenchyma and is excreted in the seminal fluid. Thanks to its presence in the serum it is used as a reactive marker. Its serum levels, however, may be elevated in various other conditions. Its specificity rate is thus not ideal, and low PSA levels do not rule out cancer of the prostate. In combination with rectal examination and transrectal ultrasound, PSA determination is used as a useful marker for discovering and following adenocarcinoma of the prostate.
