Abstrakt     Thirty three patients with unilateral stroke due to cortical and/or subcortical ischaemic lesion in the territory of the middle cerebral artery were included in the study. The effect of the volume and of the location of the ischaemic lesion on the degree of motor deficit and its recovery were evalulated. Patients had minute neurological examination early after admission and 6 months later, including the arm function test. With CT, cortical and subcortical lesions were identified and the volumen measured. The degree of motor deficit and the motor recovery did not correlate with the volume of the ischaemic lesions. The poststroke motor recovery in the cortical infarcts was better than in the subcortical ones. In some suncortical lesions substantial motor recovery was also present, depending on the location of the capsular ischaemic lesion (anterior, or/and posterior limb).
