Abstrakt     In addition to other changes, at least in later stage of the HIV disease, oral cavity changes are often present. Especially two of them, hairy leukoplakia of the tongue and oral thrush are specific enough to evoke suspicion of HIV disease. It must be stressed that oral thrush, caused by Candida species is usually undommon in younger people. With hairy leukoplakia, the appearance is that of ribbed whiteness along the lateral sides of the tongue, which onmicroscopic examination happens to be hyperkeratosis of squamous epithelium with viral inclusions of proliferated Epstein - Barr viruses. Other common oral cavity changes in connection with HIV disease are angiosarcoma of Kaposi, long-standing ulcerous stomatitis, refractary gingivitis and the ocurrence of intraoral exophytic changes (warts). Hairy leukoplakia of the tongue and oral thrusth are important as indicators for the clinical diagnosis of HIV disease.
