Abstrakt     Acute infectious diarrhea (AID) frequency depends on the economic, hygienic, and educational level in the population. These factors also determine the etiology of AID. We have researched the etiology of AID in our hospital for the period of 21 years. Results are shown in tables 1-3. One canobserve and increase of salmonelloses on behalf of Salmonella enteritidis. Since 1991 this Salmonella has been the most frequentcause of AID. Such a trend is in accordance with data from Europe and the United States. A higher incidence of Salmonella indicates a greater usage of processed food in human and an increase of proteinadditives in cattle food. The prevalence of Salmonella enteritidis around the world is possibly caused by buying the protein additives from the same manufacturer. Since 1982 shigelloses have been equally frequent as salmonelloses. Their frequency didn'f change until 1990 when it dropped to half its former frequency. After a short rebound to its former high incidence in 1992, their frequency has constantly been dropping. This decrease inincidence of shigelloses in Croatia indicates an increase of economic and hygience of shigelloses in Croatia indicates an increase of economic and hygienic standards of the population. The increase in incidence in 1992 can be explained by the onset of war and imigration of refugees and displaced persons into Croatia. Campylobacterioses have constantly been as frequent as shigelloses since 1981, when we started their laboratory diagnostics. Yersinioses are, nlike in Scandinavia and Canada, still relatively seldom in Croatia.
