Abstrakt     The carcinogenic risk of chemicals is assessed in basic and epidemiologic studies. Several working groups and recognised institutions evaluate the evidence on the carcinogenicity of chemicals, biologic and physical agents, and classify them in several groups according to the level of evidence of their carcinogenicity to humans. Among the most known such institutions is the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) from Lyon, France, with its List of agents, mixtures and exposures classified as to their carcinogenic risk to humans. The list may assist national legislative authorities in limiting/prohibiting exposure to such carcinogens to the lowest possible IeveI.The agents, mixtures and exposures according to the IARC's list that are carcinogenic or probably carcinogenic to humans are presented. Along with the agent, the source of exposure and the target organ are mentioned. According to the results of epidemiologic studies, in the etiology of cancer the pollution of living and working environment is not as important as lifestyle with smoking, unhealthy dietary practices ond excessive alcohol consumption. Data on cancer incidence in Slovenia are gathered and processed by the Cancer Registry of Slovenia, located at the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana. Lowering the exposure to carcinogenic agents in the environment is primarily the task of the society: regulations ond surveillance should limit the exposures to the lowest possible level. That is the reason why the data on the location and the level of exposure should be regularly processed and monitored. Proper information and education of the general population about all sources of carcinogens is also important. For this purpose the European Code Against Cancer has been developed in 1989 and revised in 1995.
