Abstrakt     The basis of drinking mineral waters instead of water from the tap is not so much in their being healthy and it is also not a matter of habit-it lies in the fact that they are significantly cleaner and of more constant composition. International regulations on toxic contents and faecal contaiminations are more rigorous for mineral water in many countries. Considering mineral water consumption, Slovenas is among the most developed countries in Europe. The favorable effects of mineral water in health resorts (drinking in the course of treatment) are partly a result of specific environment. Better hydration also has a favorable effect. Prospective comparative studies including groups of healthy subjects and patients to live in the same environment and drink the same water (mineral or from the tap) are needed to document physiological and therapeutic effects of specific mineral waters. The latter depend on temperature, pH value, volume, osmolality, C02, ions aud relations between them. The composition of a mineral water does not indicate its physiological and therapeutic effects. Specific studies are needed for specific mineral waters, for different indications and specific populations.
