Abstrakt		Carious dentine is made up of two layers. The outer layer is avital, infected with bacteria and has irreversibly altered structural components. In contrast, the inner layer is vital, uninfected and the changes in its structure can still be reserved. The outer layer of carious dentine must be completely removed during cavity preparation, but the inner layer should preferably be preserved. The two layers cannot be accurately distinguished by visual and tactile methods. With the use of a caries detector, the inner layer can be identified and preserved.
