Abstrakt     The present paper gives an overview of findings describing the relationship between creativity, special taletns, intelligence and brain functioning. The structure of the neocortex is outlined, as well as the methods used to investigate neocortical activity related to cognitive processes. The neural structure of the neocortex is described, with special emphasis on columns of various size and corticocortical interactions. A further outline is provided of the subdivision of the neocortex in relation to the most prominent sulci and gyri of each hemisphere and their relation to physiologicaland psychological functions. A description will be given of the techniques and methods used to measure brain functioning, like electroencephalography, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography. An overview of studies investigating the relationship between creativity, specialtalents, intelligence and brain functioning is presented. Some classical studies relating hemisphericity and creativity are summarized, as well as some newer findings proposing that enhanced development of the right cerebral hemisphere may be associated with extreme intellectual giftedness. Further, some recent, and ongiong studies relating the lower mental activity ofgifted and creatice individuals during problem solving to the non-use of many brain areas not required for the problem at hand will be introduced. The research findings will be discussed in light of various ability theories.
