Abstrakt | The aims of this study were to determine optimal turnaround times for blood samples and assess the influence of information technology and organisational changes on the administrative processes and the turnaround time in a clinical laboratory. The empirical research for the study was conducted in the emergency laboratory of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana from October 1994 to October 1995. The working processes in the laboratory were analysed using the method of structured analysis. Data were collected by direct interviews, monitoring of the working processes and study of laboratory records. For analysis of the turnaround time, the method of case study was employed. Turnaround times for sodium determinations, blood cell counts and blood gas analysis were measured, and the mean mounthly values were calculated for each test. The influence of information technology and organisational changes on individual components of the turnaround time was assessed. The report includes an extensive survey of the literature, focusing on information technology, communication in the laboratory, laboratory information, key factors determining the turnaround time, and the problem of setting clinical standards in this field. The results of the present study are compared with those foreign researches. In the final section, the conclusions of the study are presented, further improvements in laboratory information systems are recommended, and areas for future research are proposed. | |
