Abstrakt     Recent studies have shown a higher prevalence of asthma in the western part of Germany in comparison with the eastern part. Along with other possible reasons, differences in the indoor environment such as allergen load, indoor climate and air quality, were blamed for the higher prevalence. During a large asthma study in Germany concentrations of culturable moulds in settled dust were measured. 200 of the apartments investigated initially (100 each in Hamburg and Erfurt) are analysed for this study. Although significant differences in total concentration of mould spores were not found, much greater risk of high exposures was found in Hamburg. Estimates of the 95-percentile cutoff point produced 9 apartments in Hamburg and only one in Erfurt. Looking for single genera, the same trend was found for Aspergillus and Cladosporium.
