Abstrakt		We encounter hazardous substances virtually everywhere in the course of our daily lives. The danger is often underestimated, although the number of these substances in everyday consumer goods is higher than we think. This article aims to provide on overwiew of the basic characteristics of hazardous substances. With each group, the basic properties will be listed, along with some typical representatives, their potential harards, and so on. With some substance groups we will also provide historical data on their development and use. Two groups of dangerous substances will be discussed in somewhat greater detail: explosives, and poisonous and harmful substances. With the latter group, an overview of chemical weapons, animal venoms and phytopharmaceutical preparations will be included. We will describe and provide examples of carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic hazardous substances. An overview of occupational diseases and the legally stipulated conditions which must be met for a disease to be classified as occupational will be provided.
