Abstrakt		Ultrasonographic measurement of the common carotid artery intima-media thickness provides assessment of the presence and progression of atherosclerosis. It may be used to study the natural history of the disease in population-based studies. The carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is an indicator of atherosclerosis because of its close association with cardiovascular risk factors and atherosclerosis in other arteries (coronary arteries, arteries of the lower extremities). Further research is needed to characterize the nature of global thickening of the arterial wall and its association with the process of atherosclerosis.
Izvleček		mMerjenje debeline intime-medije v arteriji carotis comunis omogoča ugotavljanje prisotnosti in progresijo ateroskleroze ter študij naravnega poteka bolezni v epidemioloških študijah. Merjenje debeline intime-medije lahko uporabljamo kot indikator ateroskleroze zaradi tesne povezave debelino intime-medije, dejavniki tveganja za razvoj bolezni srca in ožilja in aterosklerozo drugih arterij (koronarnih, perifernih). Nadaljnje raziskave so potrebne, da bi povsem razjasnili naravo zadebelitve žilne stene in njene povezave s procesom ateroskleroze.
