Abstrakt     Spinal cord lesions resulting in paraplegia or tetraplegia a serious form of physical affection. In addition to paralysis and disorders of sensitivity to touch, warmth and pain, further disorders are involved in secretion and sexul functions. Urinary incontinence, however, occupies the top of the list of functional disorders associated with fellings of shame, inferiority, dependence and loss of selfassurance. The goal of the project is to present the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord lesions, special stress being laid on urinary incontinence. Described are types of urinary bladder disorders, the training of the urinary bladder, and aids such as used in caring for incontinent patients. Presented is Dorothee Orem's self - care model of nursing, based upon the principle of self - care. A healthy individual possesses balanced ability and needs for self care. A sick person is confronted with greater needs but his self - care abilities are inefficent due to poor knowledge, deficient skills and motivation of functional handicaps. The nurse assesses the deficiency and intervenes according to the patients abilities. The life stories deal with the distress of the patient with spinal cord lesions, their courage and determination to overcome the problems that would otherwise thrust them back to tke margins of society. Put forward are some suggestions how to deal more efficiently with incontinence probems of patients with spinal cord lesions.
