Abstrakt     A group of 162 infants with obstetric brachial palsy, in whom the lesion was confirmed during operation, was investigated. In 14 infants with a complete root avulsion of both C5 and C6 or a complete rupture of the upper trunk nearly no spontaneous muscle activity was present after 4 months. In 2 of these 14 infants a fiber density of 3.7 and 3.6 was measured in the biceps brachii msucle. In an infant with a partial root avulsion of C6 a fiber density of 1.5 was measured, which is the same as in normal adults. This means that the disappearance of spontaneous muscle activity is at least partally due to reinnervation by collateral sprouting.
