Abstrakt | In recent years Europe has witnessed a great increase in the choice of drugs for self-medication. These are known by the abbreviation OTC, over-the-counter. Factors for this increase are mainly legalizating the status of OTC drugs, various governmental measures to decrease funding for medicines, and directing more drug information to the consumer thereby allowing individual responsibility for their health. The most direct influence on the growth of OTC drugs is the "switch" procedure which allows safe and effective drugs to be changed from a prescription to an OTC status. This presentation provides a review of the drugs that have been switched since 1983 to the present. Also a comparison is made to the situation in Slovenia with a special emphasis on switching of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. | |
