Abstrakt     Communication by chemical signals in insects was described first at the end of 19th century; their isolation, structure determination and synthesis was enabled in the last few decades with development of new modern techniques in chemistry. In the review article the biological, chemical and application aspects of communication with chemical signals are described. According to their structure and function chemical signals are classified into different groups. Species specific structure of pheromones is correlated with their effect on behaviour and development. Insect chemoreceptors and information transmission via the sensory neuronal pathway is represented with the central nervous system phenomena like convergence and multimodality. Methods for phermone isolation, structure determination and synthesis are described together with emphasized role of bioassay and electro-antenography as the esential tool for chemical method control. Practical applications of pheromones and other semiochemicals in pest monitoring, mass trapping, mate disruption and other uses are shown at the end.
