Abstrakt     Slovenia fisheries have been seriously affected by the fragmentation of the former Yugoslavia and the ensuring independence of Slovenia in 1991 which resulted in the loss of markets in the former republics and a reduction in the sea areas available for marine fisheries. Ventures in mariculture are also restricted by limited areas. Marine fishing areas and mariculture production are reviewed, and catches presented in tabular form. The many inland waterbodies favour sport-fishing and fish-farming. Freshwater sport-fishing is popular and fish-farming production responds to breeding and consumption requirements. Protected species and closed seasons are listed and sport-fishing catches given by species. Fish-farming activities, the number and surface area of ponds and types of feed are noted. Imports and exports are dicussed, and product forms and major supplies/destinations are given. Fish production mainly involves canning, although frozen packs (mainly pilchard and hake) are on the increase. The last sections outline various aspects of marketing (consumer habits and preferences, quality requirements). Prospects for foreign investment are currently constrained by limited production. Fisheries development looks to increases in fish-farming and mariculture, and a restructuration of the industry.
