Abstrakt     Clasical typing methods for bacteria as biotyping, phage typing and serotyping are time and work consuming and have relatively low discrimination power between strains. Progress in molecular biology has reslted in availability of methods, which could be used to study diversity of bacterial species. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has proved to be one of the most important scientific innovations of the last 15 years. When PCR involves the use of oligonucleotide pri-mers based on short repetitive sequence elements that are dispersed throughout prokaryotic DNA, the term rep-PCR (repetitive element sequence-based PCR) is used. These elements are conser-ved among many members of Enterobacteriaceae and other bacterial species. We have examined Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from human, animal and food sources by rep-PCR. On the basis of rep-PCR fingerprints L. monocytogenes strains were divided into four major clusters matching the origin of isolation. This technique could effectively differentiate between closely related strains that were indistinguishable by using serotyping. The rep-PCR technique appears to be a rapid and simple method for typing of L. monocytogenes strains and it may be a useful diagnostic tool for this important food-borne human pathogen.
