Abstrakt     Lyme borreliosis is endemic and the most prevalent tick-borne infection in Slovenia. In the present study we analysed phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of Borrelia strains isolated from patients with different manifestations of Lyme borreliosis. Protein profiles were determined by SDS-PFGE, plasmid profiles by PFGE, and species identification by PFGE after the previous restriction of borrelial genom with MluI. MluI digestion showed that 92 (82%) isolates belong to B.afzelii, 19 (17.1%) to B.garinii, and 1 (0.9%) to B.burgdorferi sensu stricto. Borreliae differ regarding the plasmid profiles; some had unusual plasmid contents (multiple copies of the same plasmid or plasmid dimmer). Borreliae showed qualitative and quantitative differences in protein profies. B.afzelii strains expressed more often OspB, while B.garinii strains expressed more often OspC. Phenotypic and genotypic differences influence on virulence, pathogenesis and clinical presentation as well as on the serological tests and vaccine development.
