Abstrakt		In the last few years many reports about food poisoning caused by verotoxic E. coli can be found. The most common serotype E. coli 0157 is mentioned. The aim of our research was to find out whether the healthy cattle in Slovene is a natural source of verotoxic E. coli, presence of serotype E. coli 0157 and possibility of food contamination. From 1996 till 1998 250 swabs taken from cattle rectum, 250 swabs taken from meat surface, 93 samples of minced meat and 117 raw milk samples have been examined. After previous bacteriological examination production of verotoxin was found in 20,4% cases at isolates from rectal swabs with ELISA test. Serovar E. coli 0157 was isolated in two cases. At swabs taken from meat surface the production of verotoxin was not confirmed. Production of verotoxin was confirmed in one case out of 93 minced meat and in one case out of 117 raw milk samples. The results of our research indicate that verotoxic E. coli is present in Slovenia and sometimes serotypes E. coli 0157 are present too.
