Abstrakt     Lyme disease is caused by infection with Borrelia afzelii. Many experiments have shown that neutrophils are one of the most important mechanisms for eliminating Borrelia and that resistance to phagocytic elimination correlates with infectivity of B. afzelii isolates. We used C5a to stimulate chemotaxis of polymorphonuclear granulocytes and measured potential inhibitory role of Borrelia antigens. We exposed human neutrophils to a mixture of a strong chemoattractant C5a and ultrasonically disintegrated B. afzelii isolated from an infected mouse. The ultrasonically disintegrated B. afzelii did not impair chemotaxis of neutrophils stimulated by C5a. In contrast, when neutrophils were exposed only to B. afzelii antigens they also showed some chemotactic activity compared to negative control.
