Abstrakt     The elimination of viruses by thermotherapy and meristem culture of garlic (Allium sativum L. cv. Ptujski-spomladanski) and induction of multiple shoot formation at the same time was studied, to give a large number of healthy plants in the shortest time. The best multiplication rate was achieved when meristems grew on initiation medium supplemented with 1 micro M indole-acetic acid and 1 micro m benzyl-adenine, and were then transferred to multiplication medium with 5 micro M jasmonic acid and 5 micro M 2-isopentenyl-adenine. On average, 6-7 shoots formed from one meristem without callus formation. Pretreatment of plants with thermotherapy did not interfere with initial shoot development, but drastically reduced the multiplication of shoots. Addition of jasmonic acid to the medium induced bulb formation on shoots after 10 weeks of culture. Bulb formation was additionally enhanced by pretreatment of plants with thermotherapy. Elimination of onion yellow dwarf virus was 90-100% as tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
