Abstrakt     The concentration of tumour necrosis factor a (TNF alpha) was measured in the gingival fluid and serum of 14 beagle dogs with ligature-induced periodontitis. Gingival fluid samples were collected with microcapillary tubes 6 months after ligature placement. The amount of dental plaque and the degree of gingival inflammation at the sampling sites wer assessed with the following clinical parameters: plaque index, gingival index, probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL). The serum of seven dogs was analysed before and 9 months after ligature placement. TNG alpha levelsin gingival fluid and serum were measured with an ELISA kit. Statistical analysis was performed with Pearson's correlation coefficient and paired Student's t-test. The gingival fluid levels of TNF alpha ranged from (r = 0.70, p < 0.01) and greater CAL values (r - 0.83, p < 0.01). The serum levels of TNF alpha varied between 130.0 and 180.0 pg/ml at the beginning of the experiment and were insignificantly increased or unchanged 9 months later (128.0-230.0 pg/ml). The observed increase in gingival fluid levels of TNF alpha in beagles with experimental periodontitis suggests that this cytokine is involved in periodontal inflammation and may have a role in alveolar bone destruction.
