Abstrakt     Many of the surface and ground waters in Slovenia are severely organically polluted. We often detect critical concentrations of nutrients and heavy metals. Slovenia is also a Mediterranean country with a 47 km long coastline and more or less polluted sea waters. The main cause of the sea pollution is locally dispersed waste waters, effluents from the food-processing industry, a large harbor in Koper, tourist resorts and rivers discharge such as the Rižana river with polysaprobic quality level. The results is an almost regular water bloom in the Gulf of Trieste Constant west winds bring large quantities of yellow slime from the open sea towards the cost, where anaerobic processes close to the bottom occur. A suitable solution of this problem could be achieved through a cooperation of the three neighboring countries: Croatia, Italy and Slovenia. In 1989 the Adriatic Initiative settled the goals for this priority programme. The major part of Slovenian rivers contribute to the Black Sea basin, however the rivers of the Mediterranean catchment area should not be neglected. Sources of these rivers are in Slovenia and they pass Italy where considerable load of pollutants are being added before discharging. Among these rivers the Soča river with its tributaries is the most important. The main tributaries, the Idrijca and the Koritnica are polluted with heavy metals, particularly their sediments. The aims of the presented paper are to emphasize the hydrological characteristics of th Mediterranean catchment area, to desvribe the methods of modeling hydrodynamic conditions in the northern part of the Adriatic sea and to assess the water quality of the rivers running into the Gulf of Trieste with a special consideration on nutrients loading.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
