Abstrakt     Gringing and acid etching damages the surface of dental enamel and increases its permeability. In vivo the damaged enamel surface requaires several months to remineralize, and in this period the tooth is more susceptible to decay. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and a two-chamber diffusion cell, we studied the influence of an adhesive resin coating, applied to the acid-etched or ground enamel surface, on the diffusion of spin probe molecules through the enamel. The results showed that the coating significantly reduced the permeability of the enamel, thus suggesting that dental adhesives may prove useful for the protection of the damaged enamel surface in clinical practice.
