Abstrakt     Palatal enamel on bucco-palatal sections of 52 upper third molars was examined by a scanning electron microscope. The enamel thickness 1 mm and 2.5 mm occlusally from the cemento-enamel junction, and the thickness of atypically structured cervical enamel were measured. The height of the atypically structed enamel (aprismatic enamel, enamel with atypically shaped prisms) and enamel without Hunter-Schreger bands was determined. The height of the atypically structured cervical enamel ranged from 103 to 756 mm and was inversely related to the enamel thickness, suggesting that cervical enamel formation follows some order. The atypical structural properties of cervical enamel may affect its susceptibility to caries and its biomechanical characteristics as well as the efficacy of acid etching.
