Abstrakt		This study deals with comparison of four search engines: Alta Vista, Excite, Hot Bot and Lycos. The comparison is based on evaluation of search engines user's interfaces and on search precision in terms of relevancy among the first twenty results returned for six different querties. In the first part the study presents main types of databases and their usage, focusing on onformation Retrieval systems, their structure and the most frequent methods of indexing and searching. The process of Information Retrieval and some of its problems are dealt with. The second part gives the describtion of WWW based databases and describes how they work. The evulation of search engines user's interfaces, based on the amount of various functions offered by a user's interface is then deald with, followed by determining the precision of search engines among the first twenty results returned. Two factors were particularly accounted for when determining the precision: the estimated degree of relevancy based on the prepared set of criteria and the position of a particular result among the first twenty results. Finally the precision results are given and explained. Thus, Excite is the search engine which has acquired the best score and it is followed by Hot Bot and Asta Vista, while Lycos turned out to be least successful.
