Abstrakt     Adolescence today lasts much longer, because the changes of puberty which are the physiological basis of this period occur sooner, while social maturity and economic independence are, due to longer schooling, reached later. The problems of adolescence are diverse and numerous, but are becoming increasingly similar in different countries. Each problem occurring during this period has dual significance, the difficulties of the young person and the consequences to their health during mature age. Adolescent medicine involves several diverse activities which are on the one hand aimed at the health of the young and on the other hand a key to health in later life. The approach to adolescent medicine must be comprehensive, unlike the approach to child and adult medicine, and requires the specific training of the doctor. In recent decades a new branch of medicine has developed - adolescent medicine. It appears as a sub-specialist activity inother branches of medicine, but is in essence more broadly set than clinical subspecialisations. It involves all the medical needs of young people in their environment and is carried out with the co-operation of the young people themselves, their parents and schools. Adolescent medicine extends beyond the scope of classical medical approaches. The model of school medicine developed in Croatia and Slovenia is by context and organisation very similar to the current model of adolescent medicine. An appropriate and creative training programme for doctors represents a constant challenge for efficient and modern health care for the young.
Izvleček     Danes traja adolescenca vse dlje, ker pubertetne spremembe, ki so fiziološka osnova tega obdobja, nastopijo prej, medtem ko socialno zrelost in ekonomsko neodvisnost zaradi dlje trajajočega šolanja dosežemo kasneje. Problemi v adolescenci so pestri in številni, toda vse bolj podobni v različnih državah sveta. Vsak problem v tem obdobju ima dve razsežnosti: najprej gre za težavo, ki jo ima mladostnik, nato za posledice na zdravje v odraslem obdobju. Adolescentna medicina ima več različnih dejavnosti, po eni strani zadovoljuje zdravstvene potrebe mladih in sočasno je tudi ključ zdravja v poznejšem življenjskem obdobju. Obravnava adolescentov mora biti celovita, drugačna kot za otroke in odrasle, zato potrebuje zdravnik specifično izobraževanje. V zadnjih desetletjih se razvija posebna medicinska dejavnost - adolescentna medicina. Pojavlja se tudi kot subspecialistična dejavnost pri drugih medicinskih vejah, čeprav je v bistvu širša od kliničnih subspecializacij. Zajema vse zdravstvene potrebe mladih v njihovem okolju, izvajamo pa jo s sodelovanjem mladih, njihovih staršev in šole. Adolescentna medicina presega obseg klasične medicinske obravnave. Model šolske medicine, ki se je razvijal na Hrvaškem in v Sloveniji, je po vsebini in organizaciji zelo podoben sedanjemu modelu adolescentne medicine. Primeren in kreativen program izobraževanja zdravnika pomeni trajen izziv za učinkovito, sodobno zdravstveno varstvo mladine
