Abstrakt     In my research thesis I presented the epidemiological cancer characteristics in the community of Kočevje in the period 1965-1994. using descriptive epidemilogical analysis of crude and cumulative incidence rate, I tried to find out whether the cancer incidence in the community of Kočevje differs from that in Slovenia, and whether the higher incidence in men could be attributed to a higher prevalence of risk factors in the community of Kočevje. The questionnaire used on a random stratified sample of adult population of Kočevje was aimed to estimate the presence of the chosen and well known risk factors associated with the development of environment-conditioned and lifestyle-conditioned cancers, as well as of the public health awareness in the community of Kočevje, as compared to Slovenia in total. The descriptive data analysis has shown crude and cumulative incidence rates of all male cancer sites in all three periods is higher in the community of Kočevje than in Slovenia. In the second period, the cumulative incidence rate for all male cancer sites was statistically significantly higher, while crude and cumulative incidence rates for all female cancer sites in the community of Kočevje were through all periods about the same as the total values for Slovenia. Among individual sites, statistically significant higher rates were observed in all three periods for male lung cancer, in the first two periods additionally the urinary bladder and skin and lip cancer. In women, the rates for lung and skin cancer were higher in the first periods, but the difference was not statistically significant. There were statistically fewer cases observed in female liver, gall-bladder cancers in the first and third perido. The incidence of other cancer sites was not significantly different from that for the whole Slovenia.(Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
