Abstrakt		Mitochondria are organelles with their own mtDNA. The knowledge about the mitochondria and the resulting understanding of the mitochondrial diseases has increased very rapidly during the last decade. The article covers the mito-chondrial diseases, their classification based on the molecular genetics, their clinical signs and the possible methods of treatment.
Izvleček		Mitohondriji so organeli z lastno mitohondrijsko DNA (mtDNA). Znanje o njih se zadnje desetletje izredno hitro povećuje, z njim pa tudi razumevanje mitohondrijskih bolezni. Prispevek govori o dedovanju pri mitohondrijskih boleznih, navaja razvrstitev mitohondrijskih bolezni na osnovi molekularne genetike, opisuje klinične znake bolezni in možnosti pri zdravljenju.
