Abstrakt     The Paper deals with the vegetarian diet, its specificity and effect upon the growth and development of the child. Lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet constitutes an adequate mode of diet for babies, infants and adolescents as it gives protection against civilizatory diseases. Strictly vegetarian, respectively uniformly vegetarian or macrobiotic vegetarian diets thouhgh are inadequate for the above mentioned age bracked, for they may cause severe pathological symptoms due to the absence of some vital nutrients like some proteins, taurine, vitamins D and B12, calcium iron, cinc, copper, selene, and some long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. The absence of vitamin B12 inevitably triggers off neuropsychic disorders and megaloblastic anaemia. A lack of iron entails sideropenic anaemia whereas a calcium and vitamin D deficiency induces rickets. To ensure the best posible development of children on a vegetarian diet, a steady cooperation of patents and pediatricians, carefully monitoring the childs mental and physical progress, is essential.
