Abstrakt     The huge economical impact of groin hernia surgery has been reemphasized by laparoscopic usrgical techniques. The societal costs for groin hernia surgery are determined by the incidence of inguinal hernias, by the indication for surgical repair and by success of the operative technique. Besides the patient and the surgeon, four other parties become incrasihgly interested in the economic background of hernia surgery: the hospital, the health insurance organisations, the biomedical industry and the politicians. Depending on the modalities of hernia surgery - outpatient, local anethesia, laparoscopic repair, disposable instruments - the costs may vary in a range of several hundred million US Dollars per year. Surgeons carry an enormous responsability for cost-effective management of groin hernia.
