Abstrakt		Basic facts of liver embryology are described. The development of a single hepatic bud and later two hepatic buds with ingrowing vitelline veins is discussed and the development of the the umbilical part of the left main portal branch explained. The embryological reasons for sectorial division of the right and especially the left liver are noted as well as some of the reasons for arterial and biliary differences in the left liver lobe.
