Abstrakt     Since contemporary psychiatry confronts the challenge of overcoming the Cartesian dichotomy between psychological and biological therapies for mental disorders the author determines the extent to which such irrational biases based on ideological differences are present among Slovenian psychiatrists. The author s hypothesis was that the existence of an ideological dichotomy between psychiatrists - psychotherapists and psychiatrists - psychopharmacotherapists would be reflected in their different practice and attitudes about prescribing psychotropic medications in the course of psychodynamically oriented individual and group psychotherapy. The author surveyed Slovenian psychiatrists using a questionnaire specially devised for this survey. Three years following the first a second survey was undertaken. In both surveys the same questionnaire was used. The results of both surveys did not confirm the existence of ideological biases and dichotomy among the surveyed psychiatrists. Contrary to our expectation we found a rather high rate of uniformity of attitudes and practice among Slovenian psychiatrists in regard to prescribing psychotropic medications in the course of psychotherapy. The author underlines the role of the social context in promoting and maintaining such a high ratio of uniformnity of attitudes and practice of the surveyed psychiatrists. To a certain degree irrational biases could be traced in the first survey in regard to prescribing medications during the course of psychodynamically oriented group psychotherapy. This finding was not confirmed in the second survey. The autor underlines the role education might have had on the observed shift in attitudes between the two surveys. The comparison of the results of both surveys points to the complex role education might have in promoting attitudes, that may change under the influence of both conscious, theoretical and experiential input as well as unconscious psychological processes.
