Abstrakt		Initial management of intoxications with unknown agents and of patients with metabolic acidosis of unknown origin can be difficult without toxicological analysis. Initiation of treatment can bot always be witheld until confirmation of diagnosis. Calculation of anion gap and especially combined determiantion of anion and osmolal gaps turns out to be a simple, quick and cost-effective toll in the hands of clinical that has to decide wheher or not to start specific therapy.
