Abstrakt     The cases coming to an emergency department are clearly very diverse. I have dealt with only a few of the most remarkable types of the problems encountered there. The nature of the work in an emergency department demands that a medical nurse should be able to act professionally in every situation. What does this imply? She must be properly trained and should regularly take part in refresher courses. She must be tidy, tactful, and capable of establishing correct contact wit the patient and his relatives as well as maintaining good relationship with her colleagues. Only by being in command of the verbal and non-verbal technique of communication will she be able to help the patient in a most satisfying way as well as avoid or alleviate situations stressful to herself. Let us always have the following thought of Hippocrates before our mind: "ONE FEELS A DROPLET OF ILLNES MORE THAN A BARRELFUL OF HEALTH", and it will be easier for us to establish positive communication.
