Abstrakt     Patients opinion plays an important role in the planning and evaluation of the quality of bealth care. If patients are to be satisfied, then we have to know thier expectations, wishes and needs. The right to choose one's general practitioner enables the patient to show his satisfaction with the doctor and his practice. My hypothesis was that most patients given the choice, choose to stay with the general practitioner they were already visiting, and that patient satisfaction with the doctor and the services offered were the main reasons a patient chose to stay with the general practitioner. To test the hypothesis I sent questionaires to three practices to the Piran district. I used a questionaire culled from previous similar researches and from my own experiences. The patients were asked to indicate how they first came into contact with thier general practitioner and secondly what personal and organisational qualities they most appreciated. Most patients (70,4%) opted to stay with the general practitioner they were already visiting. 14,4% of patients were influenced by freinds, relatives, other doctors or the press. I found a high degree of satisfaction, which increased with age (p=004). Amongst attributes patients most appreciated in thier general practitioner were that he took time to listen to thier problems (90,9% were of the opinion that this was very important), that he was pleasant (74,5% thought that this was very important), and that he was an expert (88,2% felt that this was very important). The willingness of the doctor to make house calls was an important factor in the patients choice of the general practitioner. On the whole patient satisfaction was quite high and is definetily linked with the doctor's chsracter, that is why it is very important that in graduate and post-graduate studies, besides clinical knowledge ,the art of communicating should also be taught.
