Abstrakt     Diabetes occupies an important place among chronic noninfectious diseases and it contributes largely to morbidity and mortality of a population. Medical care of diabetics is provided in clinics for diabetics; general practitioners are not involved enough in monitoring diabetes within the scope they master. General practitioners, as well as patients themselves, are not aware enough of the fact that more aggressive treatment of diabetes contributes significantly to a decrease in acute complications of disease and also in formation and progression of chronic complications, which diminsh the quality of life and normal social efficiency of a patient. The purpose of the thesis is to find out (by examining medical records of diabetics) how a general practitioner follows up diabetics in reality, how much he is acquainted with risk factors, with the state of glycaemia and lipide values in blood. These data should serve as a basis for better monitoring of diabetics and for cooperation with diabetologist. The prevalence of diabetics among patients in general practice Pivka is 4.5 %, which corresponds with the prevalence of diabetics in Slovenia and elsewhere (1,2,3,4). The record of risk factors in a medical record amounts to 54 %; in 94,4 % of patients blood presure had been measured - 46 % among them are normotensive, 43 % have peripheral pulses controlled and as many as 53 % of patients have blood glucose values higher than 7,8 mmoUl, which corresponds with the data of some other studies (5,6,7). For better medical care of diabetics it is above all necessary to adapt medical records and to keep to the standards in accordance with the Saint-Vincent declaration.
